    President: Jessica Chiu

    Jessica Chiu
Born and raised in Minnesota, Jessica (MSSA’s President) did her undergrad in Chemical Engineering at the one and only U of M. She works in the Odom group, where she researches nanoparticle-cellular interactions for cancer therapeutics. In her free time, she enjoys walking or running along Lake Michigan, listening to music, exploring the city, and discovering new places to hike.

    Vice-President: Dilara Meli

    Dilara Meli
Dilara (she/her) grew up in Switzerland and received her B.S.E. in MSE from the University of Michigan. At Northwestern, she researches structure-property relations of organic mixed conductors in the Rivnay group. Dilara is an avid backpacker and enjoys trying out new vegan recipes in her free time.

    Secretary: Leah Borgsmiller

    Leah Borgsmiller
Leah is the secretary of MSSA and is in the Snyder group where she spends much of her time shaving ytterbium to make thermoelectric materials. She is originally from Maryland and did her undergrad at Northwestern as well (go ’cats!). When she’s not studying thermoelectrics you can find her exploring Chicago, attending shows and sports games, hiking, and taking care of her houseplants.

    Treasurer: John Misiaszek

    John Misiaszek
John (he/him) was born in Mexico, spent much of his childhood in Arizona, then attended high school in San Diego. John earned his B.S. in MSE at the University of California, Merced. He is a member of the Dunand group, and his current research focuses on 3D printed titanium alloy scaffolds filled with a bioactive slurry for intervetebral bone implants. In his free time, he enjoys hosting group cookouts / game nights and doing a quiver of outdoor sports depending on the season: climbing, mountaineering, cycling, sailing, and skiing. He's excited to keep a balanced budget and facilitate the creation of MSSA events!

    Social Chair: Jack Hegarty

    Jack Hegarty
A New England native, Jack (he/him) completed his undergrad in Materials Science and Engineering at Brown University. He works in the Dravid group synthesizing novel nanocomposite materials for environmental remediation applications. In his free time, Jack enjoys playing tennis, skiing, taking photos, making various forms of art, and hiking.

Student-Faculty Liasons: Paul Chery and Grace Wickerson

    Paul Chery Grace Wickerson
Paul is in the Haile group where he is working on making solid acid fuel cell cathodes out of cheaper, more sustainable materials. After dark, he loves playing piano and listening to music. If it's not too dark, he might also go on a bike ride or read a book.

Grace is a rising second year in the Rogers group, working on the design and implementation of biodegradable, biocompatible, and therapeutic medical devices for chronic diseases. On campus they are involved in working to improve the graduate student experience as a Student-Faculty Liaison for MSSA (woo!), organizing for a graduate student union as Membership Chair of Northwestern University Graduate Student Workers (yeah!), and drafting local policy memos on climate change mitigation with the Science Policy Outreach Taskforce (fun!). In their free time, Grace enjoys cooking, reading, hiking, biking, strength training, climbing, and spending time with their bunny and cat.

Outreach Chairs: Han Usama and Broderick Lewis

    Han Kossio Broderick Lewis
Born in the desert mountains of Mexico, Han did his undergrad in Materials Engineering at Universidad de Sonora before joining MSSA as Outreach Co-chair. His research focuses on developing polymers able to access human cells for peptide delivery, and understanding intracellular transport using MD simulations. You can find him during his free time exploring the city with a camera glued to his hand and film ready to shoot in his bag.

Broderick did his undergrad at the Ohio State University. He is a member of the Shull group, and his current research focuses on the mechanical properties of epoxy resins with dynamic covalent bonds. In his free time, he enjoys watching and playing sports, reading, chess, and learning Spanish.

    Inter-organization Chair: Adetoye Adekoya

    Adetoye Adekoya
Adetoye, a mechanical engineer from Nigeria, is currently a graduate student in the Snyder group where he works on Phase boundary modelling of semi-conductors. He loves to bike, read novels and listen to music. He is excited to serve as the inter-organization chair for the 2021-22 session.

    First-Year Representative: Alex Evenchik

    Alex Evenchik
Alex (he/him) grew up in Cambridge, MA, and completed his undergrad in Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. Here at Northwestern, he is a member of the Robotic Matter Lab lead by Professor Ryan Truby, and works on designing liquid crystal elastomers for applications in soft robotics. In his free time, Alex enjoys working out, cooking, exploring Chicago, and blowing glass.
